Born in Rome in 1993, after earning a degree in Pharmacy, she enrolled at ISFCI (Istituto Superiore di Fotografia) in Rome in 2019. Subsequently, in 2021, she graduated from the Master’s program in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at ICP (International Center of Photography) in New York. Her work explores the emotional depth of traumatic events, highlighting how widespread biases limit the understanding of subjective experiences, conditioning their emotional path. A member of Women Photograph, she has received three Honorable Mentions at the Moscow International Photo Awards and an Honorable Mention in AI Generated Images (2023) at IPA – The International Photo Awards. In 2022, her projects in collaboration with the Local Health Authority and the Mental Health Department of Rome earned her the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation Fellowship. In 2023, she participated at the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney with her first solo show. Since 2023, she has been working with Valentina Piccinni and Jean-Marc Caimi on her first book.

Flavia Piola’s artistic research explores the inertia of change, analyzing deeply ingrained unconscious biases in Italian society. In her work, she combines archival material with digital photography, aiming to create a logical connection between the past and the present, examining discrimination and enriching it with questions and symbolic silence.
